How to Use Our Tire Chain Finder to Choose the Best Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

When winter weather hits, having the best snow chains for your vehicle can make all the difference. Whether you need tire snow chains for your car, SUV, or truck, our Tire Chain Finder helps you find the perfect fit. Follow these four simple steps to confidently prepare for the season:

Step 1: Check your owner's manual

The first step in selecting the right snow chains or truck tire chains is consulting your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Most manufacturers include specific clearance requirements for tire snow chains under sections like "chains," "traction devices," or "tires."

It’s crucial to choose recommended snow chains that comply with the minimum clearance standards for your vehicle. This information is based on the original tire and wheel size listed in your owner’s manual. If you’ve changed your tire size, the compatibility of your snow chains may be affected.

If you cannot locate this information, contact your vehicle manufacturer for guidance.

Step 2: Visually inspect your tires for the correct tire size

Even though the tire size is listed in the owner’s manual and on the door placard, it’s always best to double-check. Inspect the sidewall of your tires to confirm the correct size.

Not sure how to read tire sizes? Our Tire Chain Finder page includes helpful illustrations and explanations to make sense of those numbers and letters. Knowing your exact tire size ensures you select the best snow chains for your vehicle.

Step 3: Enter tire size in the search field

Enter your tire size into the search field on our Tire Chain Finder tool. As you type, suggested sizes will appear—be sure to select the correct one.

Once selected, you’ll see a list of recommended snow chains tailored to fit your tire size. If no options populate or you have questions, reach out to our team for assistance.

Step 4: Pre-fit your tire chains

After purchasing your snow chains or truck tire chains, it’s essential to perform a pre-fit test.

- Ensure your chains have enough clearance to operate correctly.
- Practice installing them before encountering snow or ice.
- This step will save you time and stress when conditions are less than ideal.

Pre-fitting your chains gives you peace of mind that they’ll perform when you need them most.

How to Read Your Tire Size:

Tire size must be known in order to select a traction product. On most tires the size will look like this:

The Tire Width is 225mm wide, the Aspect Ratio is 75% and the tire is mounted on a Wheel that is 16 inches in Diameter.

Tire Width is the measurement from one sidewall to the other.

Aspect Ratio is the height of the sidewall (from the edge of the inner rim to the tread) in relation to the section width. (In the above example, the tire’s height is 75% of its width of 225mm.)

Wheel Diameter is simply the measurement of the wheel from one end to the other.

The letter “P” means the tire was designed to be fitted on a passenger vehicle (cars, minivans, SUVs and light duty pickup trucks). “LT” would mean light truck. The letter “R” is regarding the construction of the tire – Radial, meaning the layers run radially across the tire.

CHECK YOUR OWNER’S MANUAL FOR CLEARANCE RESTRICTIONS!!

IMPORTANT: Tire chains should be fitted to the tires before actual use is required.
